For some reason, EMD's comment about readying a book reminds me of a bit from this old PS2 RPG. You were a guy with a sword, of course. But you eventually run into this girl that does healing spells. Her spells are good, but she's rather lousy at attacking. We ran into a giant spider, and her reaction (and probably EMD's if she was in that situation) was to attempt to whack the hell out of it with her spellbook. It was an awesomely funny sight. "GAH! *WHAM*"
